Beauty pageants were once only a trend in the USA, but now
pageant fever has spread across the globe and is sweeping our nation. Pageants receive
a lot of negative response as they can be considered exploitative. However, Miss
Teen Queen Pageant contestant Chloe Hart tells us why it’s good for girls to
take part in beauty pageants.
Miss Teen Queen began in 2006 and is a beauty pageant for
girls aged 12-19. Girls apply online, and if their application is successful
they will be invited to a photo casting in London, where they will receive a
makeover and photo shoot.
If they are successful at this stage, their photo will appear on the Teen Queen website where the public can vote for their favourite and are charged for each vote.
The two girls with the most votes from each section get through to the live finals, where they compete for prizes such as clothing, cosmetics and international travel. Miss Teen Queen promotes charity and fundraising, as the girl’s progress in the competition they are given the opportunity to visit the countries helped by the funds they have raised.

Chloe first applied for the competition at Birmingham
clothes show where the pageant was advertising. When her application was successful,
she was invited to a photo casting in London:
“This was an absolute blind
folded journey for me because I didn't really know what I’d signed up for, I
just wanted to put my name down for the experience of entering a beauty pageant,
I am really photogenic and always wanting to get in front of the camera, inspire
other girls to do the same thing and get involved with charity work”.
Modelling isn't a career that Chloe would like to pursue
full time in the future, however she is excited about the opportunities it
could bring.
“I’d like to get involved
with bigger pageants such as Miss Great Britain, which I think would boost my
confidence a lot”.
Chloe believes pageants like these are great for making
girls feel good about themselves and meeting lots of new faces in the process.
“It has definitely helped build my confidence,
I have taken part in lots of different shoots which made me more confident
about myself, and made some new friends at the same time”.
She believes that the reason beauty pageants are so popular
is because of the way they make the girls feel.

She also stresses how being part of a pageant doesn't mean
you have to be perfect, every girl’s look is different and Teen Queen help to
embrace each girls individuality. Chloe’s advice to girls taking part in
similar pageants would be:
“Just relax and have fun. You don’t have to have the
perfect look to enter these competitions, everybody will be given a chance to
take part”.
